El legendario medio scrum sudafricano Joost Van der Westhuizen falleció hoy en Johannesburgo a los 45 años, a raíz de la enfermedad neuromuscular esclerótica lateral amiotrófica (ELA), también conocida como “Enfermedad de Lou Gehrig”, que le fue diagnosticada en 2011.
Según un cable de agencia EFE, la fundación del ex capitán de los Springboks anunció su fallecimiento luego de su traslado con urgencia el sábado a un hospital de Johannesburgo, donde había registrado signos de estabilización y mejora en las últimas horas.
Van der Westhuizen, quien nació el 20 de febrero de 1971 en Pretoria, se transportaba en sillas de ruedas y estaba con respiración asistida, pero a pesar de ello luchó contra la enfermedad sin dejarse de mostrar en público.
Entre 1993 y 2003, Van der Westhuizen integró los Sprinboks en 89 ocasiones, un récord que fue quebrado en 2007 por su compatriota Percy Montgomery. En 1995, obtuvo el campeonato del mundo cuando el certamen se realizó en su país, venciendo en la final a la Nueva Zelanda de otra gloria del rugby como Jonah Lomu, fallecido en 2015 como consecuencia de una enfermedad renal.
